Obituary

PIKEVILLE, KY- Larry David Keene Sr.,84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 10, 2025, following a stroke. He was born September 24, 1940, to the late Alvis Pat Keene and Dixie Morris Keene. He experienced the most important day of his life when he born again on April 28, 1968- the day he gave his heart to Jesus Christ.

Larry was a man who never met a stranger. Whether he was preaching in a small country church or chatting with someone in a grocery store parking lot, he found a way to talk about Jesus. He genuinely loved people and wanted them to know the hope and joy he had found in Christ. He served faithfully at First Baptist Church of Pikeville, where he was soon to be honored as a Deacon Emeritus, a recognition of his decades of servant-hearted ministry.

He was witty and had a special way of making people feel at home. Larry loved to laugh. He was also a loyal fan of Kentucky Wildcats basketball, Pikeville High School, and his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He loved the game, but more than that, he loved watching it with people he cared about.

Larry is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 63 years, Judy Keene, and their children: Larry David Jr. and Candice Keene and Lara Keene. He was preceded in death by his son, Alvis Pat Keene II, whom he missed deeply.

He treasured his grandchildren: Jordan Mullins (Samantha); Jarrod Mullins and Grace Mullins; Alvis "Patrick" (Kelly) Keene, Larry David Keene III (Hannah), Clark Keene (Onda) and Hannah Keene. He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren who lit up his world.

Larry is survived by his brother, Dr. Charles Nichols and his sister, Peggy Schnell. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patsy Keene, and his brother, Lloyd Keene.

Though not related by blood, Leigh Ann Branham held a special place in Larry's heart. He often called her "Daughter # 2" and loved her as his own.

A celebration of Larry's life will be held at First Baptist Church of Pikeville on Sunday July 13. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM for family, 4:00 PM for friends, followed by the funeral service at 6:00 PM.

Entombment will take place the next morning, Monday July 14 at 11:00 AM at Annie E. Young Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the church by 10:00 am to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery.

Larry's family takes comfort in the promise of John 14:2 (KJV): In my father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
