Freddie Fayne Short, age 83, of Pound, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on May 22, 2026, after a lengthy battle with illness, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Dessie Short, mother and father-in-law Claude and Ethel McFall, brother Randall Short, and sister Vera Lee Mullins.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Anita McFall Short; his children, Heather Wilson and husband Paul, Stephen Short and wife Geraldine, Terry Short, Brandon Short and wife Rebecca, and Channing Short and wife Lasha. His beloved grandchildren: Austin Short and wife Christy, Ethan Short, Bryson Wilson, Chloe Wilson, Owen Short, Dawson Short, Harper Short, Reid Short, and Emersyn Short. A dear niece, Rhonda Salyers; his special cousin, Travis Short; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Freddie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and devout servant of the Lord. He was known for his steadfast love for his family, his strength, and the quiet wisdom he shared with those around him. Above all else, Freddie cherished the time spent with his loved ones and took great pride in the family he helped build. Though his passing leaves a tremendous void, Freddie's legacy of love, dedication, and devotion to family will continue through the generations that follow.

Freddie worked over 50 years in strip mining and highway construction for Appalachian Construction Company, Doug Mullins, Wharton Brothers Coal Company and many others. He and Anita owned and ran the Pound Market and Austin motel.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Tuesday May 26, 2026. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of services.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Short Family Cemetery- Pound, VA. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12 noon to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Channing Short, Austin Short, Ethan Short, Bryson Wilson, Owen Short, Dawson Short, Reid Short, Paul Wilson, J.W. Salyers, and Eric Salyers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chloe Wilson, Harper Short, and Emersyn Short.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers, support, and love throughout Freddie's illness and during this time of loss.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Southwest Virginia Cancer Center.
