POUND, VA – David Monroe Cantrell, 81, passed peacefully into eternity Saturday April 19, 2025, from Norton Community Hospital. He was surrounded by his daughter and grandchildren.

David was born on August 1, 1943 and recently accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and continued his journey home. He was so happy to be free from the bonds of evil, knowing the Lord had forgiven him for his sins. David was a proud veteran of the United States Army having attained the rank of Sergeant during his 3 years of duty. He also served two four year terms years

as the supervisor of public works for Wise County. In addition he worked for several years as a loader operator for a variety of coal companies, finishing his career with Ison Coal. David and his wife Jeanette worked tirelessly together to build a life together and raise their daughter Melanie

Dawn. David was an avid democrat and supported his political party wholeheartedly. David enjoyed talking and interacting with his family, friends and neighbors. David started his day calling Melanie Dawn. The first thing he said was "who's fixin breakfast this morning?" They would talk about

anything and everything, sometimes for 10 minutes and sometimes for hours. He would always ask about the boys and Melanie would share some of the fixes Nolan and Finley had gotten into and they'd laugh till they cried.. He would always end the calls with "you and Tommy be careful and I love you Melanie Dawn" and after she told him " I love you old man" he would laugh and hang up. His daily routine was after calling he would get dressed up and head out to the Post Office and the IGA – whether he needed anything or not- and see who he could jaw with. Melanie told him that the Pound couldn't open for business until he did his rounds. David was so proud of Josh and Sarah and would tell anyone who would listen just how much and why. The babies he and Jeanette delighted in grew up and are

responsible, hardworking, respectful and honest adults who worked for everything they have. They loved their Nana and Poppy and were loved and cherished in return. David would call or drop by to check on Rocky and Anita and sometime see what Rocky and Carlyle were working on. He loved and cherished Rocky and Anita. He would tell Melanie Dawn that his family was all he had and that we were enough. There is so much more to be said about David, but the things that have been said are the core of what he was and what mattered the most to him.

David was preceded in death by his parents Buddy "Cub" and Helen (Taylor) Cantrell; his wife of 41years and love of his life Jeanette (Stanley) Cantrell; his brothers Rodney Cantrell, Max Cantrell and Jeffery Mullins; and according to David, a cat that wasn't worth much to anyone else, but meant the

world to him, his furchild and Melanie Dawn's brother-Bama

Survivors include his daughter and best friend Melanie Dawn and husband who he loved like a son Tommy Dalton-Strawberry Pains, TN; his grandchildren and their spouses who were his bonus grandchildren,  Josh and Shelby Dalton-Strawberry Plains, TN  and Sarah and Dr. Daniel Snyder-Knoxville, TN; his great grandsons, the boys, Nolan and Finley Dalton; his brother and sister-in-law who he loved like the sister he never had, Rocky and Anita Cantrell-Pound, VA; sisters-in-law Gail Cantrell-Pound, VA

and Pam Cantrell-Pound, VA; uncles, Carlye Taylor and Gary Taylor both of Pound, VA; several nieces, nephews and cousins and their families; and a host of friends and loved ones.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday April 25, 2025 in the Baker Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Randy Carter officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of services.

Whitesburg VFW Post 5829 will conduct military services on the funeral home parking lot at 11:00 am Saturday April 26, 2025. Graveside services will follow at the Dotson Cemetery on Highland Avenue in

Pound, VA where Tommy Dalton, Josh Dalton, Dr. Daniel Snyder, Brandon Cantrell, Danny Hall and Cory Burdette will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Rocky Cantrell, Nolan Dalton, Finley

Dalton and Shane Mullins. Family and friends are asked to meet at Baker Funeral Home by 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Strawberry Plains, TN or St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
